Immutable God
In my recent time of distress, I fell in love again with the old hymn entitled, Be Still My Soul by Katharina Von Schlegel. One line in particular brought peace to my troubled soul: “In every change, He faithful will remain”. Change can make you imbalanced. It can knock you down a peg or two. Change can also make you question your purpose and make you feel obsolete. It can make you feel like you’re not in the game anymore, and just sitting on the sidelines. Changes are unfamiliar and can be even scary. However, my friend, take heart that God has promised not to leave, fail or forsake us.
When you think about it, life is full of changes. The weather changes, the seasons change, and yes, in our golden years, the color of our hair changes. Even our weight and height can change as we age. People can change, our circumstances can change and our abilities can change. The only constant thing in all these changes is God. His love for us does not change, His commitment to us does not change and HE does not change.
Find a hymn book and study the words to “Be Still My Soul” by Katharina Von Schlegel, and “Great is Thy Faithfulness” by Thomas O. Chisholm. Meditate on the lines, “IN EVERY CHANGE, HE FAITHFUL WILL REMAIN” and “THOU CHANGEST NOT”, in the respective hymns. Won’t you join me in seeking comfort from the words of these songwriters as they write about the immutability of our great God?
